The original was excavated in Gotland. Originally the torque was a Celtic Gaulish neck jewel that served as a symbol of status for the wearer. It is unknown how and when the Vikings adopted this tradition, a possibility is that it was transferred from the ancient Germanic tribes. In many cases, there were no large difference between Germanic and Gaulish
